The Problem With Coverage

Not All Coverage Is the Same

Why Aristotle?

Most story analysis treats character and plot as separate problems: fix the character arc here, tighten the plot there. And ethics in script analysis barely exists. It's either willfully ignored or reduced to "is this character likable?" Aristotle treated them as a single problem.He understood that a character's psychology and ethical disposition aren't separate. What you want, what you believe is worth wanting, and how you act on that belief — these form one system.But you can't diagnose that system in a vacuum. This is because a character's state only becomes visible when the story puts it under pressure and tests it — and what the story tests is determined by its single action, meaning, its plot. The single action, the concrete thing the protagonist sets out to do, determines which aspect of character the story is actually testing.This is why script problems that look like "plot issues" may actually be character or ethical problems, and vice versa. A flat protagonist may be the result of a structural mismatch with the story's own single action. An ending that doesn't land may have a climactic choice that doesn't emerge from who the character actually is — or it may be ethically unsatisfying.So why Aristotle? Who's Behind Telos

Telos was developed by Blake Barsan, a story analyst who spent over a decade building a diagnostic framework that fuses Aristotle's virtue ethics with his poetics. His background spans actor training at the William Esper Studio, co-founding a Grotowski-inspired performer training lab, and philosophical training. The framework began as research for a book applying Aristotle to contemporary storytelling and evolved into the diagnostic system behind every Telos report.
The system encodes those principles into a structured AI diagnostic — not a prompt, but a purpose-built analytical architecture that applies Aristotelian reasoning at a level of rigor and consistency no single human read can match.
